Winter - Sound Set for u-he Zebra

Winter is a collection of 64 expressive instruments with an overall icy-cold refreshing character not limited by any particular style or genre. Few instruments will have a slight EDM feel, although cinematic might be a good term to describe the overall collection.

All instruments within this collection were created by 3ee and were optimized with modulation wheel, after touch and XY control assignments.

The XY performance controls in particular will significantly change the sound in most cases, so the number of patches can easily be doubled. I highly encourage everyone to play around with all of the assigned controls and find what best suits your needs. Each patch also includes a bit of extra information that can be accessed by clicking "i" located top-right side of Zebra's graphic interface.

A healthy selection from the Winter sound set is offered for free, not only for demo purposes but you can also use them within your musical works. You can get them here , but before anything, you might want to check out the short and to the point license agreement and terms of use.

If I were to tell you a bit more about the patches, I would mention that instead of shaping the collection after a current trend or style, I went for more a artistic approach in order to create unique and expressive instruments, usually revolving around but not limited by, hybrid physical modelling techniques.
With that being said, experimental wouldn't be an accurate term for describing the collection, as traditional methods for optimum playability related to each category were taken care of, making the instruments behave more like you would expect them to.
A list of the included instruments is available here .

  • Basses are optimized to be simple, solid and punchy. In most cases, XY1 is for controlling the tone or shaping the low end, XY2 can change the timbre and overall character, with XY3 you can control the tightness and punch and XY4 is usually assigned to control effect settings.
  • Monophonic instruments are tight, punchy and flexible. XY performance controls are similar to the bass ones, plus they can be more expressive. Of course you can use the monophonic instruments as basses and the other way around.
  • Pads are artistically unique, diverse and represent a half of the more dominant part of the collection. Usually, XY1 is for controlling the tone, timbre or motion, XY2 for the main timbre and overall character, you can use XY3 to fine-tune the envelopes as well as morph into a keyboard type instruments. XY4 can be anything from effect settings to alternative timbre and tone control.
  • Polyphonic instruments are diverse and expressive, representing the other dominant half of the collection. You will find anything from crystalline bells and frosty keyboards to hybrid acoustic ice cold textures that are carefully optimized for expression. Usual XY performance controls are similar to the pad ones.
  • Sequences are impulsive, fun to play with and are designed to be animated by the assigned controls. From pulsing arps and sequences to pattern-like textures, they are in tune with the overall feel of the collection.
  • Sound Effects are optimized as needed and designed to go with the overall feel as well. Including everything that is Winter related or can be associated with.

So, I hope that you're enjoying the audio demos and the free instrument selection and finally, if you consider that the whole sound set seem to worth the reasonable price, you can purchase it below.

  2. Hello 3ee,

Thank you for this frankly amazing collection! Obviously meticulously programmed and infinitely inspiring!

After a quick play through, some of my immediate standouts are Heiss Tea (fantastic funky flute), Arctic Depths, Ethereal Fjord Ens (could play it for hours!), Northern Strings, Snow Ensemble, Snowbow (sound like something from my old Wavestation), Cozy Vibes, Frozen Formant, Iciclophone and Fractured Ripples.

I'm travelling (to get away from winter ;-), in Sweden) and using a very simple Roland portable keyboard, so I can't even begin to explore the MW and AT.

Anyway, my only complaint is that Winter is too cheap by far. I'd gladly have paid twice or three times and felt I got value for money.

    Great work!

    Cheers,

    Joachim

I'm very happy that you are enjoying the collection!
The extra controls will bring many patches to life once you get to play around with them... and hopefully you'll make new favorites. :)

  5. I just purchased and explored. These sounds are right up my alley. There's not a dud in the bunch. I found myself playing with each sound for a while before going onto the next one. These sounds are musical, and will work well for creating music. It was a no-brainer purchase for me!

    1. Hey Mike,
Thank you very much for the feedback! :)
Obviously there will be some instruments more interesting than others, but I really tried to get all of them more or less within the same quality range.
Glad that you like the patches, have a good time with them!

Yes, I already have some interesting ones for my upcoming sound set.
Will strive for at least the same overall quality but it looks promising for the better! :)

  7. I think this bank is quite an achievement.
When I audition Zebra2 patches, I immediately tag my favorites.
A snap judgement: Do I love it? Could it be musically useful? Could I learn from it? Across my current zillion presets, the rate is about one favorite per forty.
In the Winter Sound set, my immediate favorite rate is over thirty percent. I'm impressed how you made sounds that are crystalline without being brittle.
And the low price is welcome.
